test drive meme.

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away...
You snap awake with a sudden jolt, the sounds of nature surrounding you. The ground is warm beneath your hands, a press of fabric under your head. Sit up. Look around. This isn't where you fell asleep. Not even close to it. But with no one around you, answers as to how you got there in the first place are a little beyond your reach for now.

If you decide to head off, don't forget your bag. You'll want that if you plan on making it out here. If you want to survive. And if you don't want to move, well...good luck. There's a shadow on the prowl. A rustle of leaves, a snap of twigs. Glowing eyes in the distance...

--------------------

Characters find themselves waking up on the bare ground (or a bed if they're very lucky), a leather pack beneath their head, and entirely alone. It's not where they fell asleep that night. Isn't even close. The sky is the wrong shade, the ground isn't quite right. The only note of familiarity are the clothes on their back.

Searching through their pack, characters will find a change of clothes, a few food rations, and something personal to them. They'll also find a pouch of wooden coins and a shard of mirror. Before they get a real chance to investigate those items though, they'll hear a rustle in the distance. The sounds of something moving around.

It's their cue to get moving too. And somehow, all characters find their feet guiding them in the same direction. Off towards the Great Lake, less than ten minutes walk away, no matter where on the island they first woke up.

Welcome to the island of Leutheria.
Welcome to the Fablelands test drive. Above is an arrival prompt that players are welcome to use to introduce or test out any characters they are interested in bringing to the game. Below is an on-going event that takes place throughout the first two weeks of a character's arrival.(Though the wolf will still remain a constant presence on the island for the months to come). And of course, you are free to use this post for any other prompts you wish to use, or mirrorshard conversations too. All threads are able to be used as game canon, providing both players agree to it, and can ultimately be used for bonus AC if you wish to.

If you have any questions, please direct them to the FAQ.

And without further adieu, let's get on with the show!

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away...

You wake to the feeling of being watched. Of a set of unfamiliar eyes, of warm breath on the back of your neck. A jolt back to the land of the living, and it's gone. No matter how quick you are, how sneaky, the source of the disruption has long since disappeared, so you have no choice but to try and ignore it. To continue on with your day and try to set that moment of strangeness aside.

You eat, drink, speak with others. Perhaps you explore a little. Whatever it is you choose to do for the day, that feeling from the morning won't return. And by the time the sun sets and the moon glows brightly above, you've likely set those moments of strangeness aside. It's not like it's anything new, after all.

It's the same again for the next few days. No better, no worse. Something best ignored, right?

A speck of blood on the doorframe. That wasn't there before, was it?

A snap of twigs in the distance. A crunch of leaves.

Claw marks gouged deeply into the door.

Into the wall above your bed.

Scraps of red fabric, turned darker with blood. Pieces of fur. Of flesh.

Do you run and hide? Do you fight? Whatever you choose, it's definitely time to make sure your body parts aren't scattered next...
...what a horribly big mouth you have.

--------------------

Since first waking up on the island, characters have been stuck with that feeling of being watched. It isn't a constant. Isn't more than a few seconds at a time, dotted throughout the day. Investigation has never turned up much, and there's never been any sightings of the cause of it all.

Until now.

Throughout the first half of the week, characters will find themselves suffering from that feeling of being watched on a far more constant basis. Rather than it being a one-off, few seconds occurrence each day, that feeling will last for minutes at a time, and on multiple occasions.

However, it isn't until the fifth day that they'll start stumbling across physical signs of their monitoring. There are claw marks on doors. Spots of blood on the paths outside. A crack of twigs in the forests, or the imprint of bloodied paws in the snow.

Ten days in and those signs start finding their way indoors. Wet footprints, tinged with red. Claw marks in the walls, the floor. Torn sheets and the smell of wet...something. Whatever it is that's been watching you, its finally decided to come and say hello.

Two weeks in and characters will begin to have sightings of the creature, its fur dark and its eyes a glowing yellow. At times it looks like a wolf, prowling in the distance. At other times, it's walking on its hind legs, almost human were it not for the muzzle full of gleaming sharp teeth. Get too close, and it slips away like a shadow, gone between one blink and the next. It decides when to reach out to characters, not the other way round.

It's after characters finally get a good look at the creature that it starts leaving...gifts. Characters will start to find familiar items from their home worlds amidst the mess. The remains of a childhood pet, perhaps. Photographs of loved ones, faces torn almost beyond recognition. It's only once it delivers its final gift that the creature retreats to the trees again: a blood-splattered item of clothing that clearly belongs to the person the character misses the most at the time, alive or dead.

[ Lance would agree about the humans. Isn't it weird? And isn't it weird how weird it is to them? He hasn't met any aliens here at all yet - except for that one guy, maybe, but he didn't actually see the person underneath the armor, so it's difficult to say.

Shakes his head about the shipwreck though. ]
I don't think they'd have gone anywhere. It was in the lake. As far as I know, even as big as it is, it doesn't really go anywhere else. No connection to a big river that could take a ship to sea or anything. ... Which I guess sort of rules out the other thing, too.

[ Lance watches Shiro's detached arm float across the room - that's still pretty weird too - and grab what looks like a set of tags. His eyes widen at the statement before he looks down. ] They definitely know stuff about us somehow. I guess it makes sense for them to know who they brought here and when, but... those crates looked like they'd been down there forever. It just doesn't... [ Sighs.

... okay nope, sigh doesn't cut it, add an aggravated noise to that. ]
I'm tired of stuff not making sense! What's the point of all this?

[Keith doesn't answer immediately. Instead, he considers what Shiro is saying - being kidnapped isn't that far-fetched, considering who they are, but why only the three of them, and why putting them together with all these other people they don't know? - listening as Lance answers him, too.

They both make a good point about the shipwreck. It could be that this place was once connected to the sea more openly, but it's impossible to tell. Before he can really say much of anything or react to what is being said, however, Shiro sends his arm floating to pick up something from his bag and Keith almost (almost) yelps.

He straightens up instead, tense for a second, before his brain catches up with the instinctive reaction and, slowly, he relaxes again. He's... still not used to that. He doesn't get it, either - is not having an elbow really all that comfortable? - but Shiro seems to be okay, he seems to be happy with it and, really, that's all that matters. ... He just has to get used to the fact that Shiro and his arm might not always be in close vicinity with each other.

Watching as the arm returns to him with what looks like his old tags, Keith's eyes widen a little.

He did think that Lance's family picture was odd, but he considered the possibility that Lance just had it on him, somewhere, like his casual clothes, which could explain why it was there. He didn't even give a second thought to having his blade on him, either. But those? How... How did they have access to those? Shiro didn't have them when they found him.

And then Lance is adding more to the pile - it's true, how did they know to have a box there since what feels like long before they even got here for the two of them but not for Shiro? - and Keith's head feels about ready to explode.]

Urgh-- He is right! [He looks at Shiro, frowning.] And so are you! What's the meaning of all this?!

They know things about us, they know who is here and who is not, they have access to things that shouldn't even exist anymore-- And like you said, they are probably watching us right now! Why? They haven't even talked to us! We don't have our bayards or our lions, the team isn't complete and none of these people even know what Voltron is!

Nothing of this makes any sense at all!

[Can he go outside and start shouting at the sky hoping whoever put them here listens and shows their face so he can fight them? He really wants to go outside and start shouting at the sky hoping whoever put them here listens and shows their face so he can fight them.]

[personal profile] padadin 2018-11-01 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The lake isn't connected to any water source? [He frowns.] Why would it have a ship in it then?

[He shakes his head as his mind goes the same direction as Keith's: had it been an open lake once upon a time? Terrain changes. But it doesn't match the rest of the town. Maybe the ship has been put there on purpose to be found, same with the boxes, which would explain why they were personalized.

Well, as much "explaining" as this can count as.

So yes, Shiro is feeling the frustration too, he just happens to be good at keeping calm during situations like this. But while he doesn't react like his teammates, you can still see it in his features: his hand closes around the tags tightly, his frown gets more pronounced, and the staring out of the window intensifies.... for a moment anyway. After a pause he's turning around and walking back to his friends' side, finally accepting the window won't give him any answers. (That, and the sensation of being watched was getting too much to handle.)]

You're both right. Nothing makes sense. It feels like they're playing with us. [After his experience with the Galra ring? He's willing to believe the lack of sense is on purpose. And just like then, he can't stay inside and accept it. As patience as he is, Shiro has never been one for inactivity.] We need more information, and to find natives that have an idea how this place works. Right now there's too much to blame on "just magic". We should gather resources for another day or two, maybe try to find some more weapons. If other people answer my message, we could try to start a search party.

[Leave to Mr Captain to want to get things organized and moving.]

[ Aggressively gestures. ] Exactly! [ Big pirate ship looking thing? In a lake? No, that's really not logical at all, unless there is a sizeable river he has somehow missed.

The more he thinks about it, the more he'd also like to shout at the sky.

His frustration is still clear as day when he speaks up again. ]
We haven't even seen any natives! Unless you want to ask the lake monster! And we have been looking around.

[ He sighs. ] I don't even know which direction to start in. The only really... I guess obvious place is the castle in the lake, but we couldn't even reach that when there wasn't a lake monster.

[Keith's mouth opens, the moment Shiro suggests gathering resources and trying to find more weapons-- or the natives. But before he can say anything, Lance is leading the way, putting into words what crossed Keith's mind.

It's true. They haven't seen any natives so far. There's talk about a mysterious girl that spoke to some of the people who were there before about someone being there, but they never found that girl or anyone else. Sure, they haven't looked in every single corner of the island, particularly not where the climate is rougher, but after all this time... You'd think they would have found someone (or something) already.

As for the supplies and weapons, they have been doing pretty well, too. Things are not prepared to go on a trip, but then again... Is it really that wise, considering they are already more or less aware of their surroundings? The only out of the ordinary thing in the island (besides all that could be considered ~magical~) is that castle--

... And there is Lance. Saying the same thing that crosses his mind. Again. Keith looks at him, something a bit hard to read on his face, before he blinks and looks back at Shiro. When he speaks, his tone is a little calmer than before.]

Y-Yeah. What he said. [... All of it.]

[personal profile] padadin 2018-11-07 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I take it the lake monster isn't the chatty kind?

[Is he serious or just being his usual morbid self? Probably a bit of both.

He sighs at the explanation and finally drops himself on a chair, eyes falling on the tags in his hand and thinking about the boxes in the lake. Part of him wants to go see the shipwreck himself, but what's the point? He trusts Lance's and Keith's retelling and judgment of it. Didn't he learn anything from the clone fiasco? Reach out. Compromise. Trust the team with his weaknesses.]

You're right. Sorry. I need to remember you guys have already done most of the checking out and exploring. It's just very frustrating to stay here, unable to do anything. The lack of answers make me want to go out and re-check it all myself. [He looks up at them again, his precious little family, and he tells himself it could be worse. He could be here alone.] But if you two haven't found anything, then I won't either.

[Gotta give credit when credit is due. The frustration is getting on his nerves and default Shiro mode wants to stomp leadership all over, but he controls himself. They're in this together.]

Maybe we should take it easy for a few hours. Wait to see if someone answers, have some food. What do you say? If there's no new information from the replies, we can brainstorm something to try and reach that castle. If the monster appeared out of nothing one day, it can go away as easily, right?

[And even monsters sleep, he wants to believe.]

[ Not that long ago it would've surprised him for Keith to agree to a thing he said, much less several, all in a row. Today he's not really taken aback at all. ]

Nope! Just big and scaly. Not so much with the talking. [ He doesn't know whether or not Shiro was kidding, but that's no reason not to answer the question. Meanwhile, he's really, really glad that Shiro isn't asking to go see the shipwreck. Mostly because... the whole experience was a little strange. What with diving a lot longer than normally possible. .... Than humanly possible.

Let's not dwell on that too much.

The tension in the room seems to dissipate somewhat the moment Shiro finally sits down. Lance moves to half lean against, half sit on the back of the couch. He nods at the apology. ]
Yeah, I get that. This place is good at being frustrating.

[ The suggestion has him nodding again. ] Sure, sounds good to me. [ And then he looks at Keith, a nonverbal what about you? ] If you're saying we should take a chance on the lake monster though, that's a hard pass from me.

[ All in good humor, but... he likes living, okay? ]
